Comes from the traditional skills used by working horses on cattle ranch/stations. The events we see today are designed to show a horse that is athletic, responsive and capable of doing real ranch work, just like they would out in the paddock
During the 1990s, western riders started wanting classes that looked more natural and practical than modern show events. This led to the development of ranch-style classes based on everyday ranch jobs - opening gates, navigating obstacles, working cattle and covering ground with a smooth, purposeful stride.
In 2007, the American Quarter Horse Association officially created Versatility Ranch Horse, giving the discipline a recognised rulebook and a set of key classes such as Ranch Riding, Ranch Trail, Ranch Reining, Ranch Cutting and Working Cow Horse. The sport quickly grew in popularity because it celebrates true horsemanship and showcases a horse's real working ability.
Today, Ranch Versatility is one of the fastest-growing western disciplines worldwide, including here in Australia. Riders love it because it's practical, welcoming and fun - and it highlights what a good, honest ranch horse should be; the discipline appeals to so many: -
